Latest phishing scam: e-mail declares credit union members' accounts are suspended

 
A fraudulent e-mail has been circulating recently, targeting members of credit unions around the country.  The official-sounding e-mail indicates that members' accounts have been "temporarily suspended" and asks the recipient to call a toll-free number.  If you call that number you will be asked for private account information.

This is a scam known as phishing.   The senders of these e-mails cast a wide net hoping to fool people into divulging personal information.

Never respond to such e-mails!  If you receive any communication asking you for personal information about your credit union account, please speak directly to us!

Notice the word your.  That's very important!  The Landmark Communications Credit Union is owned by its members!  It is not owned nor operated by Landmark.  In fact we pay monthly rent TO the  The Virginian-Pilot in order to have our office in their building.

There is plenty of uncertainty for all of us right now.  No one can say for sure what's going to happen unless or until a new owner actually takes over.  Perhaps we'll change the name of the credit union.  Maybe the new owners will have a credit union as well so perhaps we'll join forces with them.  There are many options but right now it's simply too early to predict what we'll look like in a year's time.

It is the board's intention that the credit union continues to operate with little or no change.  But rest assured that this is your credit union and that the Batten family decision does not change that.
