This page is largely devoted to the family of Mathias Schleiss
and Clara Mayer, whose American descendants mainly live in Akron and Younstown OH, Milwaukee WI, Chicago IL
and Sterling Heights MI. This branch of Schleisses belong to the Donauschwaben, a group of Germans who immigrated to Eastern
Europe in the 1700s. Read about the history of these people here.

Mathias Schleiss was the first Schleiss to move to Csavoly, Hungary sometime in the 1790s; from where, we do not know. We also know little about his wife Clara Mayer.
The pair had at least eight children in Csavoly between 1797 and 1815 before Clara died March 11, 1818 at the age
of 43. One month later, on April 30, 1818, Mathias remarried to Elisabetha Uhrmann. Mathias himself died
the next year on October 16, 1819 at the age of 49.
*
Descendants of Mathias Schleiss and Clara Mayer remained in Csavoly until the late 1800s, at which time several of the families picked up and moved en masse to
Gorjani, a small town with new possibilities. Gorjani became home to successive generations of the Schleiss family until the
Yugoslavian eviction of Germans in 1944. Today, some of those families have been found living in Milwaukee WI, Chicago IL,
Detroit MI and Youngstown OH under the names of Schleis, Schleiss and Schlais. [SEE PEDIGREE
CHART BELOW]
One branch of the Schleiss family, however, journeyed to the United States much earlier. Martin
Schleiss left his family behind in Gorjani and moved to Akron, Ohio in 1912. It was there that Martin met
Maria Willig, whom he married on Valentine's Day, 1914. It was also at this point that Martin's last
name lost an 's.' The couple had 10 children, and they and their descendants continue to live in the Akron area today.

THE NORTH AMERICAN CONNECTION
|
|
| |
This pedigree chart shows how Schleisses who emigrated from
Eastern Europe to North America (the Donauschwabens) are related. I made one educated guess regarding our Youngstown
cousins. We know the father of Michael Schleiss (who changed his name to Schlais) was Rudolf Schleiss. The only
Rudolf Schleiss I can find in the Gorjani church records is the son of Mathias Schleiss and Rosina Tossenberger. While I cannot
prove it is the same Rudolf, I made that leap in judgement for the purposes of this graphic.
