Canisteo pulling in to Grand Harbor, Valletta, Malta.  Not sure about the dates, but must have been late April or early May as we had left our homeport of Norfolk VA on the 14th of April.  This was our first liberty port though we had stopped at Rota, Spain for turnover after our 10-day transit of the Atlantic.
  It seems now we spent about a week there, but it could have been less.  The Maltese were preparing to hold elections and we were warned not to become involved in their politics.  It is a beautiful country and I really enjoyed the short visit.  When we left Valletta, we pulled into Marsaxlokk where we took on fuel.  After we left, the communist party won the election and we were the last American Naval vessel to visit Malta for many years.
